A Home away from Home, the Calabar Union is the foremost organisation for people of Efik, Efut and Abakpa heritage and affiliation residing in the United Kingdom.
Serving as a bridge between the heritage of ancient independent empires and kingdoms in Nigeria, Africa and a modern western country, the Union assists members in the integration with their present environment, as well as maintaining historic links.
Born as a Child of Necessity, It was started in the 1940s by a group of friends from the Calabar Province of the former Eastern Region of Nigeria, who resided in the city of Liverpool, on arrival in the United Kingdom. This was in order to address the situation where most of the early members had no relatives in the country.
A roll call of former and present members of the Union include people who have distinguished themselves in various fields of endeavour including Kings, Professors, Judges, Government Ministers, Medical and Legal Practitioners.
In the spirit of the founders, the Union presently continues to reach out to the needy, being involved in various charitable activities in the United Kingdom and Nigeria, including the purchase and presentation of basic necessities to less privileged members of the community residing in Calabar, Nigeria.
