About Us

The Calabar Union of the United Kingdom is one of the earliest ethnic minority organisations in the country. It was started in the 1940s by a group of friends from the Calabar Province of the former Eastern Region of Nigeria, who resided in the city of Liverpool on arrival in the United Kingdom.

Most of the early members had no relatives in the country and the Calabar Union was a Support System for them, a home away from home. Some members later moved to London where the Constitution was formally enacted in 1954. Over the years, Calabar Union has been led by a number of capable presidents including the following individuals:

Ex-members of Calabar Union include prominent Efik people such as late Justice Emmanuel Effanga, Justice Edem Koofreh, Professor Eyo Ndem (Late), His Royal Emminence Edidem (Professor) Nta Elijah Henshaw VI (Obong of Calabar and Grand Patriach of the Efiks 1999 - 2008; His Royal Majesty Edidem Epkenyong Otu Efa (Obong of Calabar and Grand Patriach of the Efiks 1985–1988); Etubom Anthony Ani, former Minister of Finance; High Chief (Dr) Emmanuel Nsan, former Minister of Health.
